Wolf's Blade

Author Clare Dargin
Series The Paladins
Book # 1
Genre Contemporary, Paranormal, Shifters, Wolves
Heat Level 4
Words 32,000
Content Notes Intense, Extreme Violence, Non-Sexual Physical Assault
Publication Date 12/28/2015

Excerpt:

Callum Blake growled and grabbed his forearm. He opened his clenched fist as the nails on his hand morphed into long dark claws. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes as he fought the urge to shift. He pounded the tree and glanced up at the night sky and prayed in agony to the wolf goddess. He pleaded for help. He’d take anything she had to offer if it would provide even the smallest amount of relief.

Nothing. The pain continued. He shook his head and grimaced in an attempt to remove the fog that was starting to shroud his mind. He silently cried out to her again.

Why are you silent? You’re the reason I took this mission and now you’re allowing me to suffer?
His frustration mingled with his physical pain, adding to his misery. The beast fought its way to the surface. He opened his mouth and howled. A mixture of a roar and a yell, it relieved some of the tension within him, but it did not drive away the urge to shift. Leaning against the tree, he dug his claws into the bark, burrowing deep grooves as he exerted his strength against the muscle contraction. His pulse pounded in his ears as sweat poured down on his face. Unlike his wolf self who resided peacefully inside of him, his lycan did not have the same kind of placating nature. It yielded only to the strongest of commands exerted to it from his mind. It was supposed to live in harmony just as his inner wolf, but it refused.

For wolf shifters, their human and wolf self were like two individuals abiding in one nature. One innately human, sharing some of the same abilities and desires as regular people only with keener senses and more powerful instincts. The other, their wolf side was wild and untamed. It acted on a gut responses, using its innate sixth sense to interact with the world around it. The wolf freely gave into its passions, choosing strength and cunning over calculated reasoning.

The lycan, however, was a being whose nature lived far beyond that of the wolf. Not present in all wolf shifters, it was like a curse of their wolf self causing them to revert to a primitive version of their wolf self. Acting on impulse and rage, the lycan did not use reason or soft emotions like joy, love, and happiness, it understood violence.

Erotic Excerpt

He finished loading their bags into the truck and walked over to her and kissed her. She leaned into the kiss. It was both sweet and sexy, filled with the same passion he showed her the night before. She gave in to it, his heat, scent, and licorice taste. Heat surged through her, setting her nerves on fire. Her nipples puckered against her shirt and her pussy dripped moisture, wetting her panties.

“Mmmm,” Callum said, pulling away with a hiss. “I can taste your arousal.”

“I guess the alpha can wait a while longer,” she replied in between nipping his lips.

They chuckled as they ran inside the house. Stopping in the bedroom, they hurriedly undressed as their mouths hungrily kissed. She reached her hands out and grabbed his shoulders. She leaned onto him as her legs quaked beneath her. She blinked up at him and almost gasped at the glance he directed to her. His gaze was so intense, it glowed. Her skin prickled from her arousal. It was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen. His wolf had power and that was so hot. Her breath shuddered. He kissed her shoulders and her neck, then sucked where he had kissed. Her nipples pebbled because of his touch, while her pussy gushed.

All rippling muscles and hard angles, he was a work of art. Her gaze traveled down his body, toward the stacks of defined muscle covering his abdomen. Her mouth watered at all that tight toned flesh. Her teeth ached to bite into the wall of hard muscle, to nip into the dense flesh.

He took the tip of each of her nipples, suckling them and pulling moans out of her. She fisted her hand around his cock and pumped. His body stiffened as pre-cum coated her fingers. She knelt down and took his cock into her mouth. Thick and long, she ran her mouth up and down its length, savoring his spicy taste.

She tipped her head forward, licking and sucking the thick cock, taking more of it into her mouth. She wanted to please him as much as he did her. She treasured the idea that she was able to make him so hard. Callum slowly thrust in and out of her mouth. She added suction as he pulled out while teasing the underside of his cock. She reveled in the small grunts he gave as he responded to her ministrations.

He grabbed her by her hair and pulled her away from his dick.

“Enough. Any more and I’ll come down your throat.”

“So, I don’t mind.”  Her own need to come pooled inside her.

“I do. I want to come inside your pussy.”

Wild Darkness Calls in 'Holly Gets Darkly' by Kay Dee Royal.

“I can’t take you like this when you have no idea.” His breathless words made no sense. His body was trembling like mine. He wanted me as much as I wanted him.

Blurb

Holly Preston, freelance nature photographer, gets lost in the dark and stranded in the forest on a mission to locate the elusive cougar for the shot of a lifetime.

Keyt Darkly, Forest Ranger, tracks her with more in mind than rescue.
She discovers cougars are nothing compared to what awaits her in a cabin hidden deep in the darkness…

Warning: Sizzling Hot, M/F, F/F, M/M, M/F/M, multiple partners, anal play, and ultra-arousing sex

Excerpt

A snarled warning from something ahead startled me. I stopped and raised the flashlight in the direction of the sound. My hand shook and the light jiggled. A large cat sprang at the wavering beam of light, like a domestic cat playing with a laser beam. Only this creature moved with the speed and stealth of a ninja, powerful muscles rippling along its haunches as it pounced only a few feet in front of me. I held my scream, but dropped the flashlight. It rolled down the hill, leaving me standing in darkness in front of…a cougar.

Holy cougar-bait, now what do I do? I couldn’t stop shaking while my knees turned to jelly and threatened to crumple under me. Crap. Okay, I had sticks…in my hand. I used one to balance and keep me from falling down.

Then the cat ripped past me, tearing in the direction of the flashlight.

It knocked me down, sticks and all. I lay there frozen, listening as the flashlight skidded here and there, until it finally went out.

The cat snarled, whether in anger or play, I really didn’t know and didn’t want to hang around to find out. I crawled, afraid to stand, feeling my way in the opposite direction of where the cat originated.
Attempting to be soundless in the dark over dead leaves was for the birds…they could fly, while I made lots of noise.

Another something snapped as my knee took the hit. Then I sensed the giant cat was near. Folding my knees under me and covering my head with my arms, I lay face down on the ground. It wasn’t for ferocious cats that a person was supposed to act dead around, but at this point I had no choice. I certainly wasn’t going to run. It would only toy with me until it killed me, like it killed my flashlight.

Its warm, moist breath moved the hair that had fallen over my arms as air puffed in and out of its mouth. I knew they smelled with their mouths open and thanked the universe it was too dark to see its sharp fangs. It pawed my arm, back, side, sole of my foot, and then my butt.

I wanted to shout, “Private place!” But as soon as the thought hit my brain, the beast’s claws shredded the back of my jeans. I jerked at the sound of tearing fabric, every part of me screaming to run, and yet the sharp nails never connected with my skin.

Excerpt-Rated R

Keyt drew himself from me and lifted me from Dax, carrying me toward the dying fire. I couldn’t believe the emptiness was hurting more than their filling me. Every abused part of me wanted more, no needed more, like I was starving, too hungry to think.

“Our pheromones. You’ve got no defense for them, but you will have once the moon cycles, little kitten.” Keyt kissed my forehead. “Come, Dax. We need a bath.”

No defense of pheromones? I had no idea what he was talking about. The blood pumping through my veins, burning me from the inside, was getting so loud and distracting. “What have you done to me, Keyt?” Moisture blurred my vision, and a thick knot formed at the base of my throat.

“Hush, little one, you have no idea what you are, but you will soon, my love.” Keyt picked up a bar of soap off a shelf and dropped it on my belly as he carried me out the door.

Spotlight: Graveyard Shift by Angela Roquet. Plus A Free Giveaway!

Blurb:

The Inferno has Evolved…

Lana Harvey is a reaper, and a lousy one at that. She resides in Limbo City, the modern capital of the collective afterlives, where she likes to stick it to the man (the legendary Grim Reaper himself) by harvesting the bare minimum of souls required of her.

She’d much rather be hanging out with Gabriel, her favorite archangel, at Purgatory Lounge. But when a shocking promotion falls in her lap, Lana learns something that could unravel the very fabric of Eternity. If the job isn’t completed, there could be some real hell to pay.

Excerpt

“Go help Coreen and Kevin! I’ll take care of them.” Josie fired another arrow through the nearest demon’s eye. Pus exploded from the gaping wound. The beast wailed and clawed at its face before Josie darted it through the skull. A cloud of murky smoke rose in its place. The second demon was quicker. It rolled away from her and scrambled behind a semi. Josie pounced onto the hood of a car and hurried after it.

The sound of traffic crunched in my ears. Angry horns blared as cars and trucks slowed around the charred bridge and missing chunk of railing. Humans may fear death, but they never pass up an opportunity to gawk at it.

I leaned over the wrecked ledge and caught a glimpse of the bus before it disappeared entirely. Kevin and Coreen’s robes laid abandoned on the crumbling bridge. I yanked mine over my head and tossed it next to theirs. It was no good to me in the water. I grasped my scythe in both hands and jumped.

The momentum of the fall pulled me under the icy water, and I found the bus, still bubbling as the remaining air inside tried to escape. I latched onto an open window and pulled myself around to the door.

Inside, Coreen and Kevin cut away the passengers’ seatbelts. Coreen jerked around and then relaxed when she saw it was only me. Kevin’s mop of curls floated around his face, rendered weightless in the dark water. He struggled with a dagger, trying to free the last man. I slipped the blade of my scythe under the buckle and tore it loose from the seat. He gave me a relieved smile, but only a brief one. Air bubbles leaked from the corners of his mouth and he pinched his lips shut again. He grabbed two of the men under their arms and heaved them out the door.

There were only five. One of the band mates must have been driving. Coreen grabbed the next two and left the drummer for me. He was unconscious. The others had a chance of making it out alive, and I hoped they did. We had enough problems. We didn’t need four additional souls to tend to.

Mickey, our catch, was slowly drowning in my arms. This wasn’t how he was meant to go, but I wasn’t about to go to the trouble of saving him just so he could die an hour later. That’s as far as destiny would take him. I was just saving him the extra trauma.

His soul glowed as I pulled it free from his body, and his eyes flashed open in surprise. I pulled him close and wrapped an arm around his waist to keep him from turning back and seeing his body. The shock is too much for some souls. I pulled him out the door and swam towards the ascending bubbles, fleeing for the surface.

Excerpt:  Immortal Possession

Clark tapped his pen against the thick folder. “We have a special case…one that could use your expertise and unique qualifications.”

“Really?” The dubious word was little more than a whoosh of air from her lungs. She probably looked ridiculous and completely shell-shocked, but it was a little too late to play it cool. Immortal Bounty needed her on a special case!

“I’m afraid I can’t give you the details until you’ve accepted our offer and have signed the proper paperwork, but it would involve your possession.”

It felt as though the floor dropped out from under her. She couldn’t have heard him right.

“My what?”

He raised his brows as though she were dense. “The use of your body, Dr. Vale.”

She glanced at the young commander, but his jaw was locked tight, the muscles in his cheeks bunching. “I’m a…I’m a forensic parapsychologist, Mr. Tanner, with a doctorate in post-Collision metaphysics. I received the highest honors in my graduating class. I was born to be an IB Investigator.”

He nodded. “And you will be—when you accept our offer. You’ll have full benefits. A life on the campus. A percentage of the bounty on every case your team leads. And a starting salary that would make your past struggles nothing but a bad memory.”

“But you said…possession. To use my body.”

She felt sick. Evelyn had always been the proverbial “easy target”. She had spent her life in fear of being overtaken by one spirit or another. And she had been, time after time, losing control over her body and her choices, being completely controlled by someone else. She couldn’t do it. No job was worth it. Nothing was worth it. But then she thought of her family. If she didn’t provide for them, who would?

“Evelyn…can I call you Evelyn?” the steward asked, but he didn’t wait for an answer. “You’re just the type of investigator we look for, but you’ve never been given a chance because of your unfortunate little problem.”

He smiled and folded his hands, but the way his gaze bore into her was a palpable force.
“This is your chance. Every employee has a one month probation period. Show us what you’re made of. Prove that you can handle working in this environment and coming into contact with malevolent spirits without succumbing. And when succumbing is what is called for, show us that you’re willing to do what it takes to complete an assignment. Do this, and your life at Immortal Bounty will be a long and happy one.”

She pressed her lips together. “But you’re talking about willingly being possessed.”

“Do you know the average age of retirement from this company?” the steward asked her.

“No,” she answered, not following his train of thought.

Clark steepled his hands and tapped his thumbs together. “Forty-seven. Which may not sound like much, until you know the average age at which an IB Mark has accumulated enough wealth to retire comfortably for the rest of their natural lives. Tell her, Commander.”

The commander’s nostrils flared as though he didn’t enjoy contributing to the conversation.
“Thirty-four when they’re recruited straight out of college. A little longer at your age.”

“Exactly,” Clark said. “Which tells you two things, Evelyn. Number one, that half the Marks who work here do so because they love it—not because they need to. And number two, that sacrificing a little in the short term could be the best, most lucrative decision of your life.”

She brought her hand to her cheek. Everything was tingling. She wasn’t sure she could feel her feet anymore. “Can you tell me what exactly I would be signing up for?”

“I’m sorry,” he answered. “We’re contracted directly by the Governing Body of Greater America, and the GBGA dictates that our operations remain classified to all non-Immortal Bounty employees. I can assure you, though, that you will be in no danger. A Sentinel would be with you at all times.”

She breathed slowly, trying to think this through rationally, but her mind screamed that she couldn’t hand her body and her will over. She couldn’t say yes to this. She’d only been a child when The Great Collision happened, but even so, she was old enough to remember the fear and chaos and how the fabric of the country had torn to shreds in the aftermath of the disaster.

She’d heard there had been a time before that day when most American families had had enough to eat and the majority of the population could find work, but that America was dead and gone. If her father wasted away from hunger, there was no agency that would lift a finger to help him now.

The steward gave her time to mull it over, and then she saw something shift in his gaze. It reminded her of a poker player who knew his hand trumped all. “This assignment will be short, Evelyn, but your career at Immortal Bounty will be long.”

He pulled something from the drawer of his desk and held it up for her to see. It took a minute to adjust her eyes to the glare of the shiny metal and read the small letters etched into the badge. That was a real IB/GBGA badge. Evelyn Vale, Investigator, it read. And under it was a contract with the seal of the Prime Executive of Greater America.

When the steward pushed the badge and contract toward her, she leaned over his heavy wood desk and carefully took them from his grip, her eyes not leaving the gleam of the metal badge in her hand. She’d made something like this when she was young with the lid of an old aluminum can. But this one…this was the real deal. It would perch on her hip or the pocket of her jacket and announce to the world that she was the real deal, too.

She clutched the badge and met the steward’s gaze. “You can protect me?”

“You’ll never be safer.”

An image of her father’s face and the satisfying weight of the metal in her hand made the decision for her. “Where do I sign?”

Clark’s lips pulled into a smile, and he reached over the desk and tapped a finger at the bottom of the first page. Evelyn took a pen from the edge of his desk and scrawled her name.

“Wonderful,” he said. “I’ll set an appointment with Human Resources for your new hire package, but the most important part is done. Welcome to Immortal Bounty, Evelyn.”

He stood and offered her his hand, and at that point, whether or not her palms were still sweaty was the furthest thing from her mind. To say the moment was surreal would be like saying The Great Collision was a tiny screwup. “Thank you, Steward Clark. I’ve wanted this for so long, and I know—”

The steward’s head cocked to the side and his gaze went distant in a way that made her miss the cellular phones of her parents’ day. At least back then you knew when you were competing with an incoming call instead of everyone using those stupid ear implants like they did now.

The steward glanced down at his desk to another stack of papers and made a hmm noise, seemingly moving on to the next task at hand. “Yes, give me a minute,” he said to someone, then he glanced back to Evelyn and frowned. She sure as heck hoped that frown was for the person on the phone and not for her.

“I know you won’t disappoint us, Dr. Vale.” Steward Clark turned his gaze toward the Sentinel on the sofa, and the man rose to his feet. He was massive, his muscles nearly sufficient to carry the weight of the large chip sitting on his shoulder. “Well, Commander Hayes, I’m sure you and Dr. Vale have much to discuss. Let me be the first to congratulate you on your new partner.”

About the Author:

"Our perception of the world is shaped by our experiences and imagery. As a genre fantasy writer it's my job to create new possibilities."

My name is L. A. Cadieux, I’m a YA/New Adult writer and social media-aholic born in Lac La Biche, Alberta, living in Calgary, Canada. Since childhood I've been mesmerized by stories of fairy tales, knights, Greek and Roman mythology and comic book heroes. Naturally, I wanted to create my own worlds/characters and set off on a long quest to write fantasy novels. Creative, yet business minded, I went on to earn a Degree in Management from the University of Alberta Augustana, specializing in Business Economics.

I'm a Project Manager by day and by night I work on my stories. After shelving some of my earlier manuscripts I decided to focus on ONE LIFE, the first in a series of Teddy Owens Stories.

As a proud mom of two – I spend my days and nights multi-tasking.
Random facts: Tim Hortons coffee and ketchup chips are my vices. I’m also a fan of the HBO and CW Networks. My favourite book is Jane Austen’s PRIDE & PREJUDICE.
